Electric Sunshine (Brooklyn Boys Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 421 ratings

“They say time heals all wounds, but it's been five years.”

CHARLIE:
I’m not ready to be vulnerable. My friends are getting worried, but I’ve been focusing on my career. That way, I don’t have time to wallow—or look for love again. And then I meet Kev.

He dresses like a catalog model, but he talks like he's got an old soul. He shows me what I'm missing, but holds himself just out of reach. I can't stop falling for him.

Can I win his trust—and his heart?

“I’m living my best life, and I won’t apologize for it.”

KEV:
I grew up fast and did things I regret to survive, but that’s all behind me now. I’m living with an annoying roommate in Brooklyn. All I have to do is stay safe and pay the rent. Sounds easy? Yeah, right.

My options are closing in fast, and I don't want to hang around street corners again. But Charlie sees the best in me when others only see their own reflection.

Can we let go of our past, and give each other our futures—and our hearts?

Electric Sunshine is book one in the Brooklyn Boys series, where good men find their happily ever afters in a hectic metropolis. It has an HEA and no cliffhanger. There will be steamy encounters, grumpy roomies, retail hell, hangover specials, and cracked hearts made better-than-new.

About the Author

E. Davies grew up moving constantly, which taught him what people have in common, the ways relationships are formed, and the dangers of "miscellaneous" boxes. As a young gay author whose role models were characters punished for their sexuality, Ed prefers his stories lightly dramatic, full of optimism and hope. Now out and proud, he writes full-time, goes on long nature walks, tries to fill his passport, drinks piña coladas on the beach, flees from cute guys, coos over fuzzy animals (especially bees), and is liable to tilt his head and click his tongue if you don't use your turn signal. I know nothing about Brooklyn, so this series was fun. I loved the diner Bubbles and the gay nightclub Friction. I liked how there was a wide variety of characters who spanned all ages and relationship statuses. There were some established couples in the background, and some single men front and center.

Enter Charlie. His boyfriend died suddenly five years ago and he’s been mired in grief ever since. He’s close to his boyfriend’s parents and has a few friends, including ones who drag him out sometimes. And he needs to step away from his high-pressure architecture job to just chill. And one night, while chilling, he meets Kev.

Now Kev has a more tragic backstory. His family booted him out at sixteen for being gay. He landed at a ranch where he learned some skills but then he left with his friend Adam and they made their way to Brooklyn. They are living in a shoddy two-bedroom apartment (well, one along with a hastily constructed wall so the landlord can call it a two-bedroom and get more rent). Adam works a number of odd jobs to make his rent while Kev does…less safe things. He takes a risk every time he sets up a new Grindr profile and not just because the site would shut him down if they knew he was selling himself.

He and Charlie hit it off and Kev realizes it’s time to walk away from that old life. His one foray into retail is a disaster and he despairs of ever finding a career. Or even a job. He’ll take just about anything at this point. Of course Charlie, witnessing this, wants to step in and help. Hell, he’d take over given half a chance. But he also understands Kev needs to do this himself. To prove to himself that he can stand on his own two feet.

I loved how these two characters came together. Two wounded souls. Two men deserving of a second chance. I also liked how Charlie had to own up to how his career was a detriment to him and Kev had to find something that would really fill his soul.

This book was low-angst and I enjoyed that. Sometimes it’s nice to just sit and read a book with great characters and a happily ever after. Of course I have to mention Nick J. Russo’s narration. He was perfect for this book and brought the characters to life. Needless to say, I’m happy to recommend the book.

This is a spinoff of "Tremble," the final book in the "Significant Brothers" series, in which we were briefly introduced to openly gay Kev and his nebulous friend Adam, who were "rescued" by Josh and Evan who brought them to their Tennessee ranch to escape general bullying and parental abuse.

This is Kev's story (on the cover), but really it's all about Charlie, the architect he meets when they hook up in Kev's new home, New York City, where Kev works as a somewhat harried rent boy. Charlie is now five years separated from his former lover, who was killed instantly in an auto crash, and he has lived the life of a hermit since then. You get the drift.

Still, there is a lot of soul searching here, and most of it works in the alternating POV chapters. Some of it is a bit sketchy--Kev and Charlie get really close together after their first encounter, and it seems a bit rushed at times, but then author E. Davies does that occasionally. Adam has joined Kev as his roommate and he is a bit of an enigma--is he gay? We shall find out in the sequel, one supposes.

Overall, I had a good time with this book. It struck a few chords and rang a few bells.

This is the first full length book that started with the introduction short in WINDSWEPT. Kev who is a small town farm boy from Tennessee, has fulfilled his dream to go to New York City. He will do whatever he has to but now he calls himself an escort or professional boyfriend. Charlie is an architect and travels the world. After his fiancee was killed he devoted all his time to building his career. The two meet by pure chance and something, deep inside both, reaches out to the other. Something fragile, yet powerful took root and neither could resist the pull. This is the magnificent journey of truth and discovery of a love that wasn't supposed to happen. Kev and Charlie are such deep, clearly opposite characters that even in a story like this, they shouldn't work. I loved this story because some how by the end, these characters did work. There is more to come in this new series and I'm going to be there for every last paragraph. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!

Readers of E. Davies who read Tremble will remember Adam and Kev, who first appeared in that book. The two of them have moved to Brooklyn and are roommates. This book focuses on Kev and his HFN. Kev is working as a rent boy? to help pay with his living expenses. He comes across Charlie one night at a club/bar he likes to visit. Charlie is just getting back into the dating scene. When he lays eyes on Kev he knows he has to take the chance to get to know the guy.

It was an okay read. It didn't really do anything for me since there wasn't really a climax. The two really danced around each other and I liked getting to know that characters but there wasn't really a "pow" in the story to keep me enchanted with it. To be truthful I was a bit disappointed there wasn't anything appealing about the book to keep me wanting.

An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest read.

I messaged the author after the foreword choked me up. Everything he’s done is better than the last and the “ it gets better” threads which run through all of his work brings hope and fluttery things in the chests of those of us who have felt alone in the crowd. Kev and Charlie have baggage and a host of reasons not to trust one another, but love wins. And it always should. This is book 1.5 in a series and I cannot wait for Adam and Darren next.
Bonus points for the gorgeous covers, which are edgy, mysterious and sexy.

What matters? Did l enjoy it ? Yes is the short answer. It is a long book and it asks some questions about safety at work which are worth thinking about. It does not rush evrybody to bed either before l actually work out who they are. A real plus. Som l never really do manage to work ouy who is who. I will read the rest of this mini series.

Not sure how much research was done in Architecture but from my experience a little difficult to believe with his work but then it is different in America. Story was a bit clunky hello and “oh I am in love and forgotten I was grieving now I am in love”. Both characters lacked a bit of depth. But it past the time on my commute to the Architects office that barely notices I am there and back home to a flat I can barely afford a mortgage on. Actually this book did not cheer me up just depressed me even more.
